Kat Von D
Hancock Park
December 2021
One could observe the aesthetics of Kat Von D as an entirely sublime and original meld of theater and fashion. Leaf through either of her two New York Times Bestselling books and you’re immediately aware of an artist transcending the tattoo art form into a unique and dynamic expression of self; yet a self that refuses to be static and craves, indeed needs movement. Like a painting by Degas or Chagall, her subjects seem captured mid stride or performance, and as in all great art the expression is complete and resonates with emotional power.
“Pretty damn awesome, beyond exciting actually,” says JP Weaver Designer Angela Isayan when the artist, model, entrepreneur and recording artist called looking for design help. Kat Von D was turning her creative focus on the restoration of her home in Hancock Park. Her 19th century 12,000 square foot home had much of the original interior architectural ornamentation, albeit in rather poor condition. Kat and Angela went to work at once on the restoration.
The Main Salon/Ballroom had the original painted Trompe-l'œil wall panels, and Kat was keen on replacing these with dimensional ornament. In addition the original Empire Style fireplace was replaced with our Louis XIV inspired “Byerly” mantelpiece. A stunning mantel over-mirror completes the ensemble. The muted greens and tipped gold evokes a wonderfully understated elegance and this color motif was carried into the adjacent Sitting Parlor with French panels flanking pained wall mirrors.
A large French cartouche serves a focal point to an exquisite window valance in the Library. A JP Weaver plaster acanthus crown moulding was selected here along with an extended dimensional frieze to border the ceiling. Completing the look, a beautiful chandelier hangs from a dimensional plaster rosette surrounded by ornamental fretwork and French quadrant scrolls.
Luxe gloss black and burnished gold finishes evoke a regal vibe with an edge in the Master Bath. JP Weaver French panels flank a large beveled mirror and the French Console Vanity over-mirror. Much of the design cue here was drawn from the showcase bath in the JP Weaver showroom.
Bold crimson and gold brocaded walls lead the eye up to a stunning burnished gold and copper ceiling in the Master Bedroom. Here an acanthus frieze/crown establishes a spring-line for a coved cornice leading to an Adam’s inspired ceiling complete with French corner and center elements available exclusively from JP Weaver.
Both Kat Von D and Angela were thrilled with the result of their efforts. As natural light pours in from the French doors across the parquet floor, across 17th century chairs and settees, spilling up onto timeless wall decor, a feeling of eternal yet utterly original beauty seems pervasive; yet another artistic manifestation from the oeuvre of Kat Von D.
