The Dome in Architecture
Design Reaching for the Heavens
September 2021
Dominating the skyline of Florence Italy is undoubtedly architecture’s most famous dome, the "Duomo", or Brunelleschis Dome , of Florence Cathedral. One of the most ubiquitous elements in architecture, domes have found their way into countless churches, cathedrals and palaces.
Domes offer a unique feature in that they will showcase the grand structure or room and obviously serve as the ceiling’s design focal point. The ornamentation or embellishment radiates from this apex outwards across the ceiling design and into the cornice mouldings. This ubiquitous technique has been employed by artists and architects since the Renaissance.
Today the dome is creating something of a renaissance on it’s own. Many of our clients have incorporated domes into the design of the main rooms and master suites of their projects.
Our current catalog of plaster domes range in size from three to ten feet in diameter, which accommodates most of our client’s requirements; of course we also create custom sizes to fulfill all possible needs.
Fortunately our Petitsin Resin line of ornamental elements reflect and compliment all of our plaster crown and ceiling composite designs, offering the perfect segue into assimilating the dome ornamentation with that of the ceiling. In addition to our Signature Design Service, this is a most valuable resource in achieving the results in which our client’s have grown accustomed.
Throughout history the architectural dome has provided an aesthetic that invariably hearkens a time-worn elegance achieved in no other way. That is not to say the dome has no place inside today’s current on-trend milieu; quite the contrary. We have embodied numerous ceiling designs with dome focal points with the aim of evoking that same venerable splendor, albeit through perhaps a more contemporary expression.
If you are entertaining the idea of bringing the design element of a dome into your project, please reach out to us. We’d love to discuss the possibilities with you.
